The Sixth and Seventh Books of Moses

Joseph H. Peterson's corrected and expanded edition of the most influential handbook of folk magic in the European and American traditions. First printed by Johann Scheible in nineteenth-century Stuttgart and titled as the wonderful arts of the old wise Hebrews taken from the Mosaic books of the Kabbalah and the Talmud, the Sixth and Seventh Books of Moses became a working text for Pennsylvania Dutch hexmeisters, hoodoo and root doctors, obeah practitioners, and rural magicians on both sides of the Atlantic. This Ibis Press edition translates the German word for word and presents the two core texts with the rest of the Scheible compilation: the formulas of the magical Kabbalah, excerpts from the Clavicula Salomonis, the Treatise Sion, the Biblia Arcana Magica Alexandri traditions, and the Revelation of the Sixth Book of Moses. The appendices gather the Black Raven spirit commands, the citations of the Seven Great Princes, the Semiphoras and Shemhamphorash, the Sefer Shimmush Tehillim on the magical uses of the Psalms, and material on astrological influences and magical cures. Peterson's foreword and the closing indexes document the book's history, reputation, and working methods.
