Anton Szandor LaVey's Satanic Bible, assembled from the rituals and essays of the Church of Satan he founded on Walpurgisnacht 1966, is the founding document of organized modern Satanism, whatever one makes of its claims. Four introductions by Burton Wolfe, Michael Aquino and Peter Gilmore trace the book's history and its afterlife inside the movement. The text proper opens with the Nine Satanic Statements and the Book of Satan, a diatribe in the might-is-right register; the Book of Lucifer carries the philosophy, against gods external to man and for indulgence rather than compulsion, with essays on love and hate, sexuality, vampirism of the psychic kind, and the Black Mass as psychodrama; the Book of Belial teaches the practice, distinguishing lesser and greater magic and setting out the ritual chamber, its ingredients and the thirteen steps of the rite; the Book of Leviathan supplies the invocations of lust, destruction and compassion and the nineteen Enochian Keys in the original language with English renderings. Controversial from publication to the present, it remains the reference point every later current, spiritual or atheistic, defines itself against.
