Ophiel, the pseudonymous occult teacher of the mid-century American scene, wrote this as the practical book his era lacked: not another account of the astral planes but a manual for entering them, functioning there, and returning with the memory intact. His opening image is the Moon card of the Tarot, the path that runs past the twin towers from the physical pool into the inner country, and his method is preparation: get the preliminaries right, he says, and the projection follows. Four systems are taught in sequence. The Little System, his famous starting exercise, builds the minimum skill for a first separation. The Dream Method works from the hypnagogic state. The Body of Light Method constructs the vehicle of consciousness in the classical manner, with the cabalistic cross and the pentagram ritual among its supports. The Symbol Method uses charged images as the door. Closing sections and addenda handle the odds and ends of practice, from alcohol flames as color memory drills to the questions students actually wrote him. Terse, opinionated and entirely practical, it remains a classic of the projection literature.
