Beelzebub: A History

Beelzebub, the Lord of the Flies, is one of the most recognizable names in the demonological canon, and Baal Kadmon traces the name from its Canaanite roots to the Salem witch trials. The historical chapters open with the god Baal and ask what the name Beelzebub really means, weighing zebub against zebul. From there the book follows the textual trail: Beelzebub in the Dead Sea Scrolls, in the New Testament exorcism controversies, in apocryphal and Gnostic literature, in occult and Christian writing, and in the popular literature of the late seventeenth century, including his prominent role in the Salem trials. The second half is practical, with petitions and rites for guidance and protection, strength of will and intellectual acuity in business, inspiration of lust, subduing enemies, and a merging meditation. A bibliography closes the volume. Readers of demonology who want the documented history before the practice will find both under one cover.
